Phase I of the “Walls That Speak” Mural Campaign is COMPLETED, and this one carries our story.

Today we celebrate the unveiling of the first mural at The Lyric of Idabel, a design rooted in the heritage, landscape, and identity that make our community unique. At the heart of this mural is the Tushka, the original mascot chosen by Idabel students in 1925. Long before “Warriors” became the common nickname, Tushka was proudly voted on by the student body and printed on the yearbook as the Idabel Tushka. That history still belongs to us, and now it lives on our walls.

The mural honors the legacy by depicting Tushka, standing as an appeal to the Great Spirit Warrior, a symbol of strength, protection, and cultural reverence that has long resonated in our community.

This mural brings together the symbols that speak to who we are:

• Tushka – honoring the Warrior spirit chosen by Idabel students.

• Eagle – courage, strength, and spiritual vision

• Scissor tailed flycatcher – Oklahoma’s iconic state bird symbolizing freedom, resilience, and the sweeping grace of life on the plains!

• Loblolly pines – the tall, familiar guardians of our landscape.

• Little River – the waterway that shaped our region.

• Redbud flower – a symbol of renewal, hope, strength, and Oklahoma heritage.

• Dogwood flower – a nod to Idabel’s own visual identity, echoing the blossoms that have long represented our community.

We proudly recognize Jeremiah Lovato, P.E. Art by Jeremiah Lovato and his son Odin, whose artistry, talent, and heart brought this mural to life. Their work captures Idabel’s spirit with authenticity and respect.

We also extend our gratitude to the select group of community leaders who helped shape the final design. Their voices, ideas, and lived experiences ensured this mural truly reflects Idabel.

Idabel, your walls are speaking and they are telling our story.

Phase I is complete. Phase II is coming. And together, we are building a visual legacy that honors our past, celebrates our present, and inspires our future.
